Questions families ask

How much water does my family need?

Ready.gov recommends at least 1 gallon per person per day. Our plan uses about 1.5 gallons to cover hygiene. A family of 4 preparing for 30 days needs about 180 gallons.

What food should I buy?

Start with rice, beans, oats, pasta and canned foods your family already eats. The plan gives you exact pounds.

What if the power goes out for days?

The plan covers safe light, phone power, keeping food safe, staying warm, and generator safety.

I have never done this. Where do I start?

Water first. Then food. Then medicine. Then a family plan for staying in touch. The plan puts it all in order for you.

Why it matters

Storms, ice and long power outages happen. Store shelves can empty in hours. A little preparation means your family does not depend on the store being open.
